Low Maintenance Backyard Landscaping

A beautiful backyard landscape is always a welcome addition to any property. They add visual appeal, provide a place for relaxation, and generally increase the value of your property. Unfortunately, they are also a nightmare to maintain.

A backyard landscape will require mowing, watering, weeding, and various other manual labor. If you want to avoid all of the hassle, you should opt for a low maintenance backyard landscaping instead.

What is Low Maintenance Backyard Landscaping? Low maintenance landscaping simply means that you will have to do less work to keep it looking good. It does not necessarily mean that it is not going to look good. In fact, most often, it will look far better than if you had done a lot of work to maintain it. There are many different types of low maintenance landscaping. Some of them are:

Rock/Stone Borders – These are basically just large rocks or stones that you arrange in a border around your yard. You can use them to separate one area from another, to create a “landscape feature”, or just for their decorative value. They are very inexpensive and easy to install. However, they do require a little maintenance. You will have to keep them clean, and you will have to keep an eye out for animals that may destroy them.

Rock Beds – These are basically just large rocks that are placed on the ground in a border around your yard. They look exactly like rock borders, except that they are much lower to the ground. They also provide a little more privacy, because you cannot see over them as easily. However, they are still not completely invisible to someone who is looking straight down at your yard.

Wood Boxes – These are wooden boxes that are filled with dirt and planted with grass or other plants. They are extremely low maintenance and very effective for hiding unsightly objects such as water heaters or oil drums. They also make an excellent border around a yard.

Grass – This is the most common type of low maintenance landscaping. It is also the least effective. Grass needs to be mowed, watered, and otherwise cared for in order to look good. If it is allowed to go unmowed for long periods of time, it will get out of control and turn into a jungle. If it is allowed to go unwatered, it will become “desert grass” and die. Either way, it will not look good.

Perennial Flowers – These are flowers that come back year after year. They do not have to be replanted every year. They include things like English daisies, sunflowers, asters, marigolds, and many others. Perennial flowers add color and beauty to a yard without requiring much attention at all. The only maintenance they need is to be deadheaded (removed) when they are finished blooming.

Of course, all of the above feel like hard work just to set up. And there’s also the matter of aesthetics. You want a low maintenance backyard landscape, but you don’t want to sacrifice aesthetics for it. This is where Water Wise Landscape comes in.
